Most backyards in North Texas go unused for half the year - not because homeowners don't want to be outside, but because there's nothing out there worth sitting under. No shade, no airflow, no reason to stay. That's exactly the kind of problem this Little Elm build was meant to fix.
We went with tongue-and-groove cedar for the ceiling. It's a material that does two things really well - it looks genuinely beautiful, and it holds up over time. The grain and warm tones give the whole space a finished, intentional feel that flat vinyl or painted wood just can't match. Once it's stained and sealed, it becomes a feature people actually notice.
The functional details matter just as much as the aesthetics. We wired in LED flat lights and ceiling fans throughout the covered area. That combination means the space works at noon in July and at 9pm on a Saturday night. Shade alone isn't enough in Texas - you need airflow too, and the fans take care of that without cluttering the space.
This is the kind of patio build we genuinely enjoy putting together. There's real craftsmanship involved - from the way the cedar boards fit together to how the electrical is routed cleanly through the structure. Every part of it was built to last and built to be used.
If your backyard is sitting empty and you've been thinking about adding a covered patio, this is what it can look like when it's done right. We build these all across the Little Elm area and surrounding communities - and no two builds are exactly the same.
